Il 6 Novembre 1964 (cinque mesi dopo The house of the rising sun) usciva il 45 giri Baby please don’t go/Gloria, autori i Them, capitanati dall’ombroso irlandese George Ivan Morrison. Baby please don’t go, lato A, era uno dei numerosi rifacimenti del blues di Big Joe Williams, edito nel 1935 - rifacimenti in cui si cimentarono MC5, Amboy Dukes, Alvin Lee, AC/DC, Doors, oltre a Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Big Bill Broonzy e colleghi. Il lato B, quello che interessa, era Gloria, una canzoncina che originerà a sua volta numerosi rifacimenti; tra gli altri AC/DC (Spektors) e Doors ... Belle le versioni di Hendrix e Johnny Thunders, oltre a quelle, classiche, di Patti Smith e Doors. Sorprendenti, ancora una volta, i Santa Esmeralda. Nessuna ha, però, il potere di contrastare l’originale: Van Morrison (come Robert Wyatt, Grace Slick o Peter Hammill) riesce ad emozionare e commuovere; e non parlo per metafore: dopo il millesimo ascolto di Caravan si ha ancora il groppo in gola.
Diciassette anni più tardi altri quattro irlandesi pubblicheranno una diversa Gloria, a rendere plastico il disinganno e il riflusso sociale. Gloria in Te, Domine a fronte di un celta lurco e lascivo che attendeva in camera la sua Caitlin, occhi verdi ed efelidi, un bocciuolino di ragazza, circa un metro e sessanta, un po’ larga di fianchi, ma insomma …
